Teacher Effects on Student Achievement and Height: A Cautionary Tale

Marianne Bitler and co-authors' recent NBER working paper, "Teacher Effects on Student Achievement and Height: A Cautionary Tale", has been covered in an article in the Washington Post here.  The paper tests the validity of common value-added measured of teaching ability by examining whether these same measures can explain something teachers cannot impact, student height. Bitler and co-authors do in fact find such an effect, suggesting that common value-added measures of teaching ability may largely be spurious.
