Frequently Asked Questions

Careers, Graduate School
I plan to attend Graduate School in Economics. How should I prepare?
See "Tips for Graduate School"
http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/undergraduates_grad_prep.cfm
What are the career opportunities with a major in Economics?
Life after College
Where can I find information related to graduate programs?
In the Academic Peer Advising Office (SSH 1101), and the Internship and Career Center in South Hall.
Change of Major, Double Major, Minor
Can I double major in Economics and International Relations?
Yes, however:
Only two classes can overlap between the two majors. Eg., in IRE Track 1 (World Trade and Development) ECN 100 and ECN 101 will be the two overlap classes. ECN 160A and ECN 160B will be for IRE major only and cannot be counted to satisfy ECN requirements.
Can I double major in Economics and Managerial Economics?
No, since there are too many classes that overlap. It is possible to petition to double major in these two fields directly to the Deans Office of the College of Letters and Science, but very few students are approved.
Can I major in Economics and minor in Managerial Economics?
Yes,
  • ECN 100 satisfies ARE 100A and is the only allowed overlapping course.
  • All of the other ARE courses will only count toward the Managerial Economics minor.
  • If you have taken ARE 100A and ARE 100B for the ECN 100, only ARE 100A will be allowed for the overlap class. ARE 100B will be considered a required class for the ECN major.

  • Effective Fall 2005, before petitioning for a minor in Manegerial Economics, a student must complete the following lower division courses with a combined grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.80. All of these courses must be taken for a letter grade. In determining acceptance of the minor petition, the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics counts only the first repeat of any lower division minor course. The lower division minor courses are: Economics 1A and 1B; Statistics13; Mathematics 16A and 16B or 21A and 21B.
What do I need to declare a double major?
  • You need first to make sure that 80% of the upper division courses of the 2 majors do not overlap. (For Economics, two 4 unit classes will be allowed to overlap)
  • You need to complete all the preparatory courses and 2 upper-division courses in each major before you can declare the double major.
  • Maintain a 2.0 gpa in the ECN classes and overall UC GPA.

Declaring an Economics major
What do I need to major in Economics?
You need a 2.0 overall UC GPA and a 2.0 overall GPA in the classes taken toward the major.
If you are undeclared, you must declare the major before you reach 90 units. If you are declared in another major, you must switch before you reach 135 units. You cannot change or declare a major in the quarter that you file to graduate.

Declaring an Economics major
Economic Classes
Do Discussion sections meet at the beginning of the quarter before classes meet?
Discussion sections will not meet before the first day of class. At the first class, the instructor should announce when discussion sections will be held. If it is not announced, assume it will be the first scheduled day after the first day of class.
Does the Economics department offer an ECN 190 course this quarter?
Currently this information can be found in the classes listing in the Undergraduates section of the Economics website.

http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/undergraduates_classes.cfm
How can I drop a course after the drop deadline?
The only way to drop a course after the drop deadline will be through your college deans office. It is not automatic that you will receive permission to drop a course. It will be the deans decision.
See the link to frequently asked questions for Letters and Science
http://www.ls.ucdavis.edu/students/faq.aspx
How can I find or how can I contact my professor?
You can find contact information for your professor at one of the following links:

http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/people_faculty.cfm

or

http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/people_visitors.cfm

How can I find/or how can I contact my Teaching Assistant?
You can find contact information for your Teaching Assistant at the following link:

http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/people_graduates.cfm
How many courses in Economics should I take every quarter?
There are no official restrictions, but it is not recommended to take more than 2 upper division courses in economics every quarter since these are not easy courses!
Additionally, it is not recommended to take ECN 100 and ECN 101 in the same quarter.
I am trying to enroll in upper division ECN courses during Pass 1 but sisweb does not allow me. What is happening?
During PASS 1 enrollment, all upper division ECN courses are restricted to Economics majors only. This restriction will be removed beginning PASS 2 when all student are allowed to enroll in ECN courses or to put their name on the wait list.
If a class is full can I get a PTA (Permission to add) number?
It is the Economics Department policy not to issue PTAs for classes with a wait list (closed courses). The only way to gain a seat in a closed course is through the wait list when another student drops. Unfortunately, since there are no guarantees that wait listed students will receive a seat in the class--it is essential you have an alternate plan. If you are not admitted when the waitlist ends, you are not enrolled in the class.

The only possible exception granted applies to students who have filed to graduate at the end of the quarter through the Registrars website. In this case, a student may receive a PTA if there are no other open ECN courses that will fulfill their Economics graduation requirements. Before a PTA is given, the students case will be evaluated to determine first that there is no other open Economics course that would fulfill the students graduation requirements.

Check for other open courses at the Registrars Open Course List (http://registrar.ucdavis.edu/ocl/opencourse.html). This website is frequently updated.
What classes are offered next quarter?
For courses to be offered for the academic year, please see the class listing in the Undergraduates section of the Economics web site. Remember this is subject to change.

http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/undergraduates_classes.cfm
What courses should I take after Statistics 13 and Economics 102 (Analysis of Economic Data 102)?
ECONOMICS COURSES WITH DATA ANALYSIS

This will expand over time and the following list may not be complete. At the moment courses include

- ECONOMICS OF EDUCATION (Economics 152)
Prerequisites: ECN 100 and ECN 102 or any upper division statistics course. Math 16 A/B or 21A/B with a C- grade or better.
Course Description: This course applies theoretical and empirical methods of economics to issues related to education and education policy.

- ECONOMICS OF TRANSPORTATION (Economics 145)
Does not currently require 102 but is more data-oriented and 102 may in the future be added as a requirement..
See http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/faculty/fzfeens/trans/Syllabus-145.pdf

- ECONOMICS OF HUMAN RESOURCES (Economics 151B)
Does not require 102 and does not analyze data. But does require reading many important papers that are essentially regression studies.
See http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/faculty/mepage/econ151b/Syllabus.doc

REGRESSION AND STATISTICS CLASSES

An econometrics or regression course will cover the regression model in more detail than we have in this course.
It will generally involve more derivations of formulae than we have in this class.
Even after taking Analysis of Economics Data there is benefit to taking an additional course.
Regression courses on campus are:

* Economics 140 (Econometrics). This is optional for Economics majors.
* Agricultural and Resource Economics 106 (Quantitative Methods in Agricultural Economics). This is required of ARE majors.
* Statistics 108 (Applied Statistical Methods: Regression Analysis).

Useful additional Statistics courses for economists are

* Statistics 130A-B (Mathematical Statistics: Brief Course).
This is bread-and-butter statistics, often required for graduate degrees.
* Statistics 108 (Applied Statistical Methods: Regression Analysis). Already mentioned above.
* Statistics 137 (Applied Time Series Analysis).

Mathematically strong students should consider taking Statistics 131A-B or 131A-C in place of 130A-B.

A minor in Statistics is Stat 106, 108, 130A-B (or 131A-B) and 1 course with 130B as a pre-requisite.

To strengthen mathematics, the course to take after a calculus sequence (Math 16 or 21) is Math 22A (Linear Algebra).
What courses will be offered in Summer Session?
This information will not be available until February/March of the year of Summer Session. You can check the following links for this information:

http://summer-sessions.ucdavis.edu/

or

http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/undergraduates_classes.cfm, just be sure to change the quarter and year to those desired.
What is the Economics Drop Deadline?
The Economics course drop deadline is the 10th day of instruction. See the Class Schedule and Registration Guide Academic Calendar on page 2 under the "10th day of instruction" for the date each quarter.
Economic Degree Requirements
Can ARE 142, 143 or 144 count for the economics major?
No, ARE 142, 143 or 144 have been reviewed by the Economics Undergraduate Studies Committee and they will not be allowed for credit toward the Economics Major.
Can I finish my major in 4 years?
To finish your degree in four years you will need to average about 15 units a quarter. Please see the four year plan in the Undergraduate Handbook:

http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/undergraduates_handbook.cfm

If you are a transfer student coming in from a junior college as a Junior please refer to this site:

http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/undergraduates_handbook.cfm
Can I study abroad and have some courses transferred?
Yes, however, the courses must be approved by the Economics Department Undergraduate Office before students leave to study abroad. See department for maximum units allowed.

It is important to note that just because UCDavis accepts the classes abroad, it does not guarantee that they will be accepted to satisfy major requirements.

Also, it is important if you are taking courses abroad with a program not offered through UCDavis EAP, you must check with the UCDavis Admissions Office
Do ARE courses count toward the Economics major?
Yes, a few of them do.
ARE 106Equivalent to ECN 140
ARE 171AEquivalent to ECN 134
ARE 100A and 100BEquivalent to ECN 100
ARE 139No ECN Equivalent, but counts as Advanced class toward ECN major
ARE 156No ECN Equivalent, but counts as Advanced class toward ECN major
ARE 175No ECN Equivalent, but counts as Advanced class toward ECN major
ARE 176No ECN Equivalent, but counts as Advanced class toward ECN major
How can I obtain certification that I have completed by degree requirements if I need it for employment or graduate school?
You can request a Letter of Certification from the Office of the Registrar once you have filed for graduation. The Letter of Certification can be provided only after all requirements and coursework are completed and grades reported. This form is also available at the Registrars: http://registrar.ucdavis.edu/PDFFiles/D005LetterOfCertCompleteReqs.pdf
How do I file to Graduate?
To officially graduate from the University and receive your diploma, you must file for graduation at the Office of the Registrars website (http://registrar.ucdavis.edu/). Filing to participate in the Commencement Ceremony is not the same as filing to graduate.
How many units do I need to have completed before I can participate in the Commencement Ceremony?
You can participate in the L&S Commencement Ceremonies if you have completed 160 units by the end of winter quarter to be eligible for the Spring quarter commencement ceremony and 150 units after Fall quarter to participate in the Fall commencement ceremony (http://www.ls.ucdavis.edu/commencement/). Contact the College of Letters and Science for more information. Remember, participation in the Commencement Ceremony is not the same as filing to graduate through the Registrars website (http://registrar.ucdavis.edu/).
I am a transfer student. Which requirements do I need to satisfy?
If you have completed the IGETC, you simply need to satisfy:
  • Economics major requirements
  • Upper division English course (see English requirement) or pass the English Composition Examination.
  • Units requirements (180 units total and 64 upper division units)
If you are a transfer from a 4 year college, out of state junior college, or you have not completed the IGETC, you will need to check with the College of Letters and Science and the Economics department for your remaining requirements.
I am graduating, what do I need to do?
Congratulations!

Graduating Seniors should contact the Undergrad office a quarter or two before they graduate to be sure that all ECN requirements are met. Your ECN major check sheet will be checked by the staff advisor at the front desk to make sure all ECN requirements are satisfied.

You should also contact Letters and Science Deans office, 200 SSH, to be sure that all of your college and residency requirements are met. The deans office will certify you for the college requirements.

If you have completed a certified minor, you will need to fill out the Petition to Declare a Minor (http://www.ls.ucdavis.edu/students/forms/declareminor.pdf). To find your completed course information for the minor petition, you can view your transcript through SISWeb. You will be responsible for providing accurate information on the minor petition. The completed minor petition will need to be signed by both the major and minor advisors. The major and minor advisor signatures will only verify that the courses you have listed on the minor petition will fulfill the major and minor requirements.

If you are changing your major or declaring a double major this needs to be done a quarter before you file for graduation or your graduation will be delayed and you will need to refile.

Filing for candidacy (your degree) will be done on line at http://registrar.ucdavis.edu

Dates to file for graduation are listed in the Class Schedule and Registration guide under the Academic Calendar. If you miss the posted date, the Registrars office will not extend the date and you will file for the next quarter. Filing to walk in ceremonies is a separate link and should be found on the same web link.

Good Luck!
I am majoring in Economics. Can I take an Economics course Pass/No Pass?
You can take P/NP classes in the major as long as:
  • at least 1 upper division ECN course is letter graded
  • P/NP unit limitation is maximum 1/3 of UCD units
  • P/NP unit limitation in the student option is maximum ¼ of UCD units
Remember that P/NP is not well-seen by graduate schools.
P/NP classes in the major will disqualify you from taking the ECN 194HA and HB courses (high-highest honors)

In addition, you will not receive units for the course if you do not pass it.
I am minoring in Economics. Can I take an Economics course Pass/No Pass?
You can take P/NP classes in the minor as long as:
  • at least 1 upper division ECN course is letter graded
  • P/NP unit limitation is maximum 1/3 of UCD units
  • P/NP unit limitation in the student option is maximum ¼ of UCD units
In addition, you will not receive units for the course if you do not pass it.
I have not finished my economics lower division requirements. Can I start taking upper division courses in Economics?
All upper-division courses in economics require at least ECN 1A-1B. In addition, ECN 100-101 requires ECN 1A, ECN 1B and the Math series with a C- grade or better. ECN 102 requires ECN 1A, ECN 1B, STA 13 and the Math series with a C- grade or better. The ECN Advanced courses require ECN 100 and/or ECN 101(some have additional prerequisites). Please reference the General Catalog for prerequisites to ECN courses.
I have not taken ECN 100 and 101 yet. Can I take other upper-division ECN courses?
ECN 100 and 101 are pre-requisites for the advanced courses. However you still can enroll in:
  • The economic history courses: ECN 110A-B, ECN 111A-B
  • The courses that only count as electives: ECN 102, ECN 115A-B, and ECN 162.
I have taken ARE 100A and will not get credit for ECN 100, what do I do?
You are correct, if you have completed ARE 100A, you will not get credit if you take ECN 100. The ECN department will require that you complete ARE 100B for the ECN 100 requirement. Eg. ARE 100A + ARE 100B will count for ECN 100 in the Economics major.
If you plan to be an Economics major, you should plan to take ECN 100.
I need to choose 12 units of elective courses. Which ECN classes are electives?
Any upper-division ECN course can be used as an elective. An Advanced Economics course will satisfy the ECN elective units. Prerequisites must be met before taking ECN Advanced courses.
If I take a course at another institution, how can I get it approved for the ECN major?
If you take a course at a Junior college within California, you can use ASSIST to articulate the lower division courses.

http://www.assist.org/

There is a maximum of 105 units transferred from a Junior college.

All out of state, 4 year colleges and EAP universities will need to go through approval via a petition. For out of state and 4 year colleges, you will need to bring a good course description (more than one line) or a syllabus to the ECN undergrad office and fill out this petition. The petition will be submitted to the ECN Undergraduate Studies Committee for review. This can take up to a couple of weeks, so it is advised to bring your information early. Courses must be approved before they are taken to avoid wasted units toward the major. (Courses already reviewed can be found on this website under "Courses" and then "Transfer Courses".

For EAP, you can check the approved courses at the Economics main web site. Go to the "Undergraduate" link and click on "EAP" If you do not find the course listed you can submit a petition by clicking on the "Request New EAP approval" (See also, Education Abroad Course Approval section of this FAQ link)

It is always advised to check your residency requirement with the deans office if your are a senior
Should I take ECN 100 before ECN 101?
The order in which you take these two courses is not important.
Should I take the Math 16 or 21 series?
If you plan to attend graduate school in economics or business school, the 21 series is highly suggested. For students who plan to go directly into the work force the Math 16 series is acceptable.
What is the difference between ECN 162 and ECN 160A and B?
ECN 162 is intended for non-majors and summarizes ECN 160A and B. If you take ECN 162 before ECN 160A and/or ECN 160B, you will only receive 2 units for ECN 160A and/or 2 units for ECN 160B (eg., If ECN 160A and ECN 160B are taken after ECN 162, only 4 units total for both classes will count toward the ECN major ). Conversely, if you take ECN 160A and/or 160B before ECN 162, you will not receive credit for ECN 162
What is the gpa required for the major?
The following gpa is required before a student will be certified for the major:
Lower Division ECN2.0
Upper Division ECN2.0
Overall ECN2.0
UCD overall2.0
When should I take ECN 100 and 101?
As soon as you complete the lower division requirements. These two courses are pre-requisites to all of courses listed in the "advanced courses" list. It is not advised that you take both ECN 100 and 101 in the same quarter.
Education Abroad Course Approval Information
How do I get courses approved for UCD credit from abroad universities not through UC Davis EAP Program?
If you are attending an abroad program other than UC Davis EAP, you will need to check with UC Davis Admissions to make sure UC Davis will accept credit from the abroad university. The Economics major accepts approved ECN courses toward the major only when UC Davis Admissions accepts credit from the abroad university and applies this credit on your UCD transcript.

Please check our website at: www.econ.ucdavis.edu ("Undergraduate" link then to "EAP" link) to see if the course(s) you are interested in taking has been approved by the Economics major. Some of the courses listed on this website are from universities not in the UC Davis EAP program. You would need to get approval through UC Davis Admissions before we could count these courses toward the ECN major requirements.
How do I submit a course for approval that is not on the EAP Economics major approval list?
If you do not see the course you are interested in taking on the ECN website, you will need to submit the course(s) for review by the Economics major. You will find the website at: www.econ.ucdavis.edu ("Undergraduate" link, then to "EAP/Request New EAP Approval" link).

You will need to include a website URL and/or use the browser button to attach course information. You can put multiple courses on one request from the same EAP University. If you have a copy of a course syllabus, you may need to save it as a file to upload into the approval form.
What courses have already been approved for the Economics major?
If you are attending the UC Davis EAP program, please check our website at:
www.econ.ucdavis.edu ("Undergraduate" link then to "EAP" link).

Here you will find a list of EAP Universities. Listed next to the EAP University is the maximum number of units the Economics major will accept toward major requirements. Courses listed from these universities show equivalent UCD courses and also courses not approved for major credit (no credit allowed).
Internships
At What Stage Can I Apply For Intership Credit?
Only AFTER you have been offered the internship by the employer.
How Do I Apply For Academic Credit For An Internship?
You need to present to Professor Joonsuk Lee (Fall 2009 and Spring 2010) or Professor Martine Quinzii (Winter 2010): (1) a letter from the employer stating that you have been offered an internship and specifying the starting date and the ending date; (2) a completely filled out application form (for internship credit) obtainable from the Economics Department undergraduate office; (3) a one-page typewritten statement (double spaced) detailing those activities that you will be performing which have academic relevance, that is, are comparable to taking a course on campus (the information given in (3) can overlap with the information given in the application form). You also have to explain in what way the experience associated with the internship builds on the economic concepts that you have learned in Economics courses already taken.
How Do I Get an Internship?
Go to the Internship Center on campus for assistance on obtaining an internship.

Or, visit the internship and job postings on the economics website.
How Many Units Will I Get?
Typically 1 unit per quarter. Sometimes 2. Very exceptionally 3.
Is Internship Credit Given Automatically?
No! Internships provide you with valuable experience: you learn about a particular job, potential employers get to know you, maybe you even get paid, etc. Thus internships carry their own rewards. You can get academic credit for an internship only if you can convince the department that during the internship you spend time on activities that are comparable to studying for a course on campus. Clearly, talking to clients, answering the phone, organizing meetings, inputting information into a computer, obtaining stock prices from the internet, etc. are not activities that are comparable to studying for a course. Only internships that have a clear research component qualify for academic credit.
Thinking of Applying For Academic Credit For an Internship?
Then you should know the following:
  1. The Economics Department only offers LOWER DIVISION credit for internships (the only exception is the Washington DC Center Internship). If you require upper division credit you should apply to another department (e.g. ARE, SOC).
  2. Internship credit will count toward the 180 unit requirement for graduation, but will not count toward the ECN major requirements.
  3. Academic credit for internships is NOT offered in the Summer.
  4. Academic credit is NOT offered retroactively for past internships.
  5. Thus academic credit is offered only during a regular quarter (Fall, Winter and Spring) for a CURRENT internship, that is, for an internship that is taking place DURING the quarter itself.
What Other Requirements Are There?
If the internship is approved, at the end of the quarter, by the third day of Finals week, you will need to submit a typewritten, ten-page (double-spaced) report outlining your experience. The emphasis must be on the research aspects of it. Credit will then be granted ONLY IF there is convincing evidence in your report that you did spend a non-negligible amount of time on activities comparable to taking a course on campus.
Where Can I Do An Internship?
Academic credit can only be given for internships at institutions and companies outside campus. You cannot get internship credit for activities carried out on campus.
Miscellaneous
Are there any Economics department Scholarships?
The Economics department offers the Michael A. Anthony Grant in alternate years with the History department. Economics will accept applications for this scholarship in Winter 2011 for the 2011-12 Academic year. Awards for this scholarships vary in amounts.

The department also offers the Sweetland Scholarships. To apply for this scholarship a student would need to file for the Continuing Undergraduate Scholarship through the UCD Scholarship Office. The deadline has been around December 1.

The Sweetland Scholarship awards $5000 to an Economics major of junior or higher standing who is a California resident. Preference is given to a student who has completed a Communications course at UCDavis. It also awards a $2500 scholarship to a continuing Economics student with preference to a student with financial aid need.

For more information about scholarships, contact the UCD Undergraduate Scholarships office in Dutton Hall.
Can I tutor in Economics?
If you are interested in becoming a tutor for an ECN course, you will need to contact the instructor of the course and get permission to tutor their class. You will need to have completed the course with at least a B+ grade in order to be considered as a tutor. Tutors earn one unit of credit for three hours of tutoring per week. Tutoring credit does not count toward the Economics major requirements.

After you have been approved by the instructor as a tutor, you will need to complete paperwork with the instructor. This completed paperwork and your office hours will need to be given to the Economics Department Undergraduate Office, 1113 SSH, before you will be issued a CRN to enroll in ECN 197T via SISWeb.
Honors program in Economics...is there one?
Yes, see economics senior honors thesis at:

http://www.econ.ucdavis.edu/pdfs/undergraduates_honors_prog.pdf
