Text:                  A First Course in Probability,   6th Ed., by Sheldon Ross

 

Prerequisite:       Math 21ABC, and 22A or equivalent

 

Homework:    There will be weekly homework. Please drop the homework in the box outside 362 Kerr Hall before the due time. Late homework is not accepted. Solution sets to homework will be posted to the web after the due time.

 

Exams:           There will be two midterms and a Final exam. The Final is comprehensive. All exams are closed book. You may bring one page with handwritten notes (9 ½ x 11, two sided) to each midterm and two such pages to the Final. An exam which you miss will be counted at 0 points. If you provide written documentation of the reasons why you missed the exam, and if your reasons are approved by the instructor, then the procedures are as follows: If you miss a Midterm the missed exam counts 0%, and your Final will count an additional 22.5% towards the grade. For Final, you will be offered the opportunity to take a make-up exam.

 

Grading: Midterm I    22.5%,   Midterm II     22.5 %,    Final     40%,    Homework   15%

Notes: You are expected to attend all four weekly class meetings (lectures and discussion). Exams and homework include material covered in class whether or not it is in the text. Some of the exam questions will be closely related to the homework problems. If you miss a class, be sure to get the notes from another student and check the course website. To prepare yourself for the course, review the following topics: Series, differentiation, integration, special functions (e.g., exponential, log, gamma function).
