Hawkins makes his first career trip to the DL with an injury he and the Giants insist he did not have when he was acquired from the Cubs three weeks ago…. Hawkins’ trip to the DL is retroactive to June 10, which means he will be eligible to return a week from today. However, Conte cautioned these nerves are slow to heal.… The Giants purchased the contract of reliever Brandon Puffer from Triple-A Fresno to replace Hawkins.”

[Here are similar reports by Chris Haft and Eric Pate.]

TSN’s Ken Rosenthal notes, “The Mets recently rejected the Giants’ offer of second baseman Ray Durham for second baseman Kaz Matsui. The trade fit the Giants’ desire to get younger—Durham is 33, Matsui 29. But the Mets view Matsui as a superior defender, while Durham’s range is extremely limited. The Giants also have expressed recent interest in Rockies righthander Jason Jennings.”

Henry Schulman reports that the grade-two strain of Alfonzo’s left quadriceps will keep him out for at least four weeks and that Grissom “flew to Atlanta for a consultation with Braves physician Dr. Joe Chandler regarding his left hamstring…. Conte said it is similar to the tear Armando Benitez had and shows why the closer opted to have a relatively new reattachment surgery, to prevent his hamstring from becoming a chronic problem as it has for Grissom…. Barry Bonds’ surgeon, Dr. Arthur Ting, told Conte he will decide on a day-to-day basis when to advance Bonds’ rehabilitation. That means Bonds could begin baseball work sooner than the two weeks recommended by Dr. Robert Armstrong, who was treating Bonds’ infection.”

[Columnist Ann Killion writes that “the shuttle from Fresno is officially full.”]

BP’s Prospectus Hit List ranks the Giants #27, noting, “Losers of 14 out of 16, with reliever Jim Brower (6.53 ERA in 30.1 innings after being the team’s mainstay with a 3.29 ERA in 89 appearances last year) the latest body thrown over the side of this sinking ship. But it’s the starters, with a combined 5.19 ERA, a 1.54 K/BB ratio, and a mere 5.73 innings per start (15th in the NL) who are the real culprits.”

Lee Sinins note: The Giants will place 3B Edgardo Alfonzo and CF Marquis Grissom on the 15 day DL and call up OFs Todd Linden and Adam Shabala.  Alfonzo has a quadriceps injury. Henry Schulman reports, “Some Giants who tried to look at tape over the weekend were surprised to find the door to the clubhouse video room locked…. Alou said if a player wants to watch himself on video, management prefers he do so with a coach so the player does not unilaterally make any detrimental changes to his swing or delivery…. Snow said he was called into manager Felipe Alou’s office Wednesday and told Niekro will play first base for most of the games in Minnesota and Detroit this week, with Snow picking up some starts as designated hitter…. As a player with a small contract and a lot of experience, including the postseason, Snow could be a prime candidate to be traded to a contending team down the stretch…. After reviewing Barry Bonds’ latest blood test, MRI and X- rays, the doctor treating his infection plans to remove him from antibiotics this week.”

[Here are similar reports by Jeff Fletcher, Chris Haft and Tony Kuttner.]

Rich Draper profiles Ben Copeland, the Giants’ top draft pick this year.
