University of California, Davis

Graduate Admissions for Fall 2005

Admission is only to the PhD program

This is a complete list of materials required for admission and financial aid.  Questions should be addressed to Marilyn Dexter, Graduate Secretary, Department of Economics, University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA  95616-8578.  Phone: (530) 752-0743;  Fax: (530) 754-6726; Email:  mldexter@ucdavis.edu

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree, preferably in economics, is required.  Students who did not major in economics should have taken at least intermediate microeconomics, intermediate macroeconomics, and two additional upper-division economics courses.  Because of the quantitative nature of the first-year theory sequence, prior completion of at least one year of calculus is essential, and a course in linear algebra is highly desirable.  Similarly, at least two courses in statistics, including an upper-division course, are very important as preparation for the econometrics courses.

Applicants with GRE verbal scores below the 60th percentile (30th percentile for non-native speakers of English), GRE quantitative below the 70th percentile, or TOEFL scores below 600 will not be considered for admission. While the minimum GPA required for admission is 3.25, the entire record (including course work and letters of recommendation) is reviewed in every case.

The following table shows data on the GRE scores of students admitted into the graduate program in the recent past:

Verbal Percentile Quantitative Percentile Analytical Writing Percentile
mode 99 92 84
median 90 90 67
mean 83 88 69

Application for Admission and Supporting Materials

Applications are accepted for fall quarter only.   Admission is only to the PhD program but students have the option of leaving with an MA degree after successfully completing the first year.  Please refer to the Graduate Handbook  for further details.

Deadline: Applications and all supporting materials must be received by December 15, 2004 to receive full consideration for admission and financial aid.  An admission decision will not be made until all materials have been received. Applications received after the deadline will be reviewed until the program becomes full, but will have lower priority for admission and financial aid.  No applications will be accepted after March 1, 2005

Send all of the following items to Graduate Secretary, Department of Economics, University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA  95616-8578:

  • Application for Admission.  (If the Application for Admission is filed electronically,  all the supporting materials listed below must still be submitted by mail to the Graduate Secretary.)

  • Statement of Purpose

  • $60 Application feeby check or money order, made payable to “UC Regents” and sent to the Graduate Secretary.  (Credit card payments are not acceptable except in the case of online application.  Online applicants need to provide their credit card information before indicating that the application is complete).

  • Official copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts.  Use transcript label from the admissions application to request that transcripts be sent by the Registrar’s office at each institution.

  • Three letters of recommendation.

  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.  (The general test is required; the subject test is not required.). Both computer-based and paper-based GRE scores are acceptable at this department (either kind of score is acceptable).  If arranging for ETS to send the GRE scores, the codes are: instituition code 4834 and Dept. code 1801.

  • International Students:  The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required if English is not your native language unless you have studied for at least one year at a school where English is the language of instruction.  If arranging for ETS to send the TOEFL scores, the codes are: Institution code 4834 and Dept. code 84.

Nonresident Tuition Fellowships

All “non-resident” applicants (international applicants and domestic Non-California residents) will be automatically considered “as if” they had applied for a Nonresident Tuition Fellowship (NRTF), so there is no need to submit a fellowship application for this kind of fellowship.  NRTF’s provide “partial” funding towards the cost of the Nonresident Tuition fee.  NRTF’s  and Teaching Assistantships (TAships) are the most common kinds of financial aid that applicants are likely to receive.  However, they are offered to only a few of the best applicants each year (approximately 10 – 12),  and do not provide full financial aid.

(Note: Domestic students, i.e. US citizens, immigrants and permanent residents, can generally establish California residency and avoid paying nonresident tuition after one year in California if appropriate steps are taken before the Fall quarter begins.)

Fellowships

The University offers several merit based fellowships and scholarships.  These are highly competitive and the Department must choose and nominate at most 4 applicants for each of these fellowships; the successful applicants are then chosen through a campuswide competition.  Historically, the Department has received fewer than one fellowship per year.  Consequently, only those applicants with a GPA greater than 3.7 and GRE scores exceeding the 85th percentile in both Verbal and Quantitative exams should apply.  For more information about these fellowships see:  http://gradstudies.ucdavis.edu/support/fellinst.html .

Deadline:  All application materials must be received by December 15, 2004.  (The GRE must be taken no later than November 2004.

For these UC Davis Fellowships (not NRTF Fellowships as described above) send to Graduate Secretary, Department of Economics, University of California, One Shields Avenue, Davis, CA  95616-8578, the following materials:

  •  Application for UC Davis Fellowship

  • Supplemental Application for Fellowships and Graduate Scholarships (required only for fellowships to support campus diversity).

Teaching Assistantships

All applicants will be automatically considered “as if” they had applied for a teaching assistantship, so there is no need to submit a Teaching Assistantship application.  For best consideration, all required admission application materials must be received by Dec. 15, 2004

 Research Assistantships

Research Assistantships are not offered to new students of this department, but are reserved for continuing graduate students.
