Born in Kafr Yasif, Palestine, Nov. 12, 1928, married to Dorothy May and has three children, John Elias, Mary Bahji, and Rabiya Suzanne. Dropped out of school but continued education through independent study and evening classes. Earned London Matriculation in 1947; certified social worker in Israel, 1952; earned BA in sociology, University of Redlands, California, 1957 and Ph.D. in Economics, University of California, Berkeley, 1962. Worked full time from age 14, beginning as an office boy in government offices, Haifa, Palestine, then as an assistant store keeper with Kodak Company, Haifa; accounting clerk with the Iraq Petroleum Company, Haifa. Following establishment of Israel, worked as a school teacher in Kafr Yasif and Buquei'a and then as probation officer for juveniles in Western Galilee. After graduation from Berkeley, taught at San Fernando State College, CA, and in Canada at the University of Saskatchean, in Saskatoon before joining the University of California, Davis, from which he retired in 1994. Since then has become a tree farmer and continues to do woodwork and sculpture, a hobby he has practiced since the late 1970s. During his career has served as consultant for the United Nations and FAO, and for a private developer in Brazil; also served as associate dean of letters and science at UCD, and as director of UC Education Abroad in Cairo, Egypt, at which time he was a visiting professor at the American University in Cairo. Enjoy woodcarving, farming, photography, and swimming.
